AbstractThe 2008 Abel Prize winners are J. Tits and J.G. Thompson.
After an introduction on Thompson himself, his life and mathematical honours, we will proceed with his mathematical achievements. We shall confine ourselves to finite group theory, notably to his contributions to unravel the structure of the finite simple groups and to certain fundamental principles developed by him, that are useful in finite group theory whatsoever.
I will arrange the talk in such a way that anyone with a non-specialistic background in group theory should be able the grasp the importance of the work of Thompson.
