We call an invariant $e$ of algebraic varieties (solutions of
polynomial equations) with the property that $e(X)=e(Y)+e(X-Y)$ for
$Y\subset X$ a closed subvariety ($Y$ is given by more equations than $X$)
an Euler characteristic with compact support
There is a simple description of the universal
with compact support in the case of a ground field (the field where the
coefficients of the equations are from) of characteristic zero.
I would like to mention some applications and generalizations.
