AbstractA coordinate is a polynomial that is a member of a coordinate system (i.e. a minimal generating set) of the polynomial ring. A simply stated but deep question is "When is a polynomial a coordinate?".We will discuss some of the history of this problem, consider some concrete examples of coordinate-like polynomials, and highlight some of the difficulties that arise in answering this question, even in simple cases. |
