Maps
To clarify the travel info below, maps are available of
- the situation at Schiphol;
- the situation around the railway station in
Nijmegen ;
-
The pedestrian's route from Nijmegen railway station to
Catharina;
- An overview of the locations of Catherina, Hotellerie Rozenhof,
De Kentering and "het Kasteeltje".
Note: Travel information to De Kentering (Dekkerswald) is included for completeness below, but
recall there is no staff on Sunday June 16.
Travel info for participants coming by plane
There are good train connections between Schiphol airport
(near Amsterdam) and the city of Nijmegen.
Upon arrival at Nijmegen railway station, you can take a bus/taxicab
bringing you to De Kentering or Rozenhof or het Kasteeltje (opposite to the
main entrance of Radboud hospital) in 10-20 minutes,
while you can walk in 10 minutes to Catharina.
Schiphol Airport -> Nijmegen railway station
In the heart of Schiphol airport
there is a railway station:
it is situated below "Schiphol Plaza"
(the central hall of the terminal).
The ticket-windows of NS (the Dutch Railway company) are situated in
Schiphol Plaza. Buy a (one way) ticket to Nijmegen. You can ask for a printed
schedule of your trip:
From Schiphol railway station you can take a train to Duivendrecht
(trains with direction Amersfoort/Hilversum/Weesp/Groningen
stop in Duivendrecht). This part takes about 10 minutes. Keep an eye on your
belongings!
In Duivendrecht you get off and pick a train to Nijmegen at platform 8
which is `upstairs' (a direct train is running every half hour). Be prepared
that after the stop Arnhem your train will continue into the direction you came
from, so it will seem that the train is 'going back', but don't worry, it will
take you to Nijmegen.
The whole trip takes 1.5 - 2 hours. For time tables:
http://www.ns.nl (click english version,
from Schiphol, to Nijmegen, and estimated time).
Nijmegen railway station -> your guest-house or "het Kasteeltje"
If you are lodging in De Kentering or Rozenhof ,
then a bus or taxicab is the best means of transport.
Taxis can be found at your right hand side (if you leave the
railway station
via the main entrance; in any case it is the side where you see Hotel Mercure).
If you have travelled by train, the Dutch railway company
NS (=Nederlandse Spoorwegen) offers you the possibility to buy a
"treintaxi biljet" (train taxi ticket) for ca. 6 euros
which enables you to take a special taxi, called "treintaxi" (=train taxi).
(The price of a regular taxi to De Kentering/Rozenhof is ca. 20 euros).
On presentation of your train ticket,
you can buy the "treintaxi biljet" at the ticket-windows of a railway
station (those of Nijmegen are open 8.00-23.00) or at the taxi.
Also you can buy a treintaxi biljet together with your train ticket at
Schiphol railway station.
If not indicated by the word "treintaxi",
these special taxis can be recognized by the NS-symbol:
.
If you see no "treintaxi", then you can press the button
in the "treintaxi"-pillar which is near the taxis stand, to order one.
Buses can be found at your left hand side if you leave the
railway station
via the main entrance.
Bustickets can be bought in the bus. If you intend to use the
bus more than once or twice during your stay in the Netherlands,
it is much more economical to buy a "15-strippenkaart"
e.g. at the ticket-windows of the railway station
For Rozenhof or Dekkerswald, you have to take line 5 heading for Groesbeek.
It will have as its destination "Groesbeek-de Horst" or
"Groesbeek-Bredeweg", in any case do not take line 5 with destination
"Grootstal" or "Hatert".
Line 5 runs every 15 minutes on Monday till Saturday and every
30 minutes on Sunday.
You can ask the bus driver to notify you when to get off for
Rozenhof or Dekkerswald.
For Rozenhof you get out at the bus stop "Rozenhof".
For De Kentering you have to leave the bus at the bus stop "Dekkerswald"
(that is the name of the Medical Centre which the Kentering belongs to).
Enter the Dekkerswald area
via the entrance gate and turn to the right
at first cross-road
(there are arrows indicating the direction for De Kentering). After some
meters there is a T-junction, turn there to the left: you can see
on your right hand side a flat-like building
which has the name "De Kentering" above its entrance.
For het Kasteeltje take line 5 or 6, get off at "Radboud", ask driver to
notify you. If you take a taxi, ask driver to bring you to the Main Entrance
of the Radboud Hospital; "het Kasteeltje" (also called 'Heijendaal Mansion,
address Geert Grooteplein 9, 6525 EZ Nijmegen, telephone during Sunday, June 16
from 14.00: 024 3615257) is just across, see picture.
For Catharina turn right
upon leaving the station's main entrance
and head for Hotel Mercure via the taxi-stands.
(As always car drivers around the station can behave unexpectedly, so
be careful).
Just before hitting
Hotel Mercure, turn left, thereby crossing the road and enter the street
in front of you (so you now are walking in a direction more or less
perpendicular to the railroad).
This street is called "Van Oldenbarneveldtstraat",
but at this point it lacks a
name-plate.
Anyway, the first visible house-numbers are 79
on the right hand side and 46 on the left hand side. The first cross-roads
you meet is with "Vondelstraat" and there you can verify via the name-plate
on the left side of the street that you are indeed walking in
"Van Oldenbarneveldtstraat".
At the second cross-roads you hit a major traffic road with traffic lights
which is called "Graafseweg" (see the name-plate attached at a lamppost
on the other side of the street);
cross this road by means of the pedestrians' traffic light on the left.
If you look at the name-plate above you on the lamppost
before crossing Graafseweg, you can see that you are heading for
"Stijn Buysstraat" which is a continuation of Van Oldenbarneveldtstraat.
Stijn Buysstraat bends to the right after some hundred meters.
Proceeding further "Stijn Buysstraat" also hits a major traffic road
via traffic lights after some two hundred meters:
this is "Sint Annastraat". Enter this street turning to the right:
Catharina is 50 meters further on on your right hand side.
Also consult the map that is available.
Travel info for participants coming by car
FROM THE NORTH (A325)
The freeway ends when you are entering Nijmegen crossing a bridge. Following
the main traffic direction you will arrive soon at a big roundabout with
traffic lights (Keizer Karelplein). Take exit Groebeek/Malden/Mook, this is
the St.Annastraat.
For Catharina:
Directly after the second cross road you will find Catharina
at the right hand side situated at the service road. There is parking space
behind the hotel, see the following map .
|
For het Kasteeltje:
Continue on the St Annastraat, following the signs 'Radboud
Hospital' or 'UMC Radboud'. Eventually you will be directed to a service road at the
left hand side of the street. A small street leads you to the Main entrance
of the hospital; at that moment you will see 'het Kasteeltje' at your left.
Do not follow the sign to the parking garage, but take the left little street
instead, it will take you around het Kasteeltje, the entrance is there.
|
For Rozenhof:
Almost immediately, at the first crossing turn left direction
Groesbeek, this is the Groesbeekseweg. After some kilometers you will see a
parking at your right and hotel Rozenhof at your left across the street.
|
For de Kentering (Dekkerswald):
follow the directions for Rozenhof, but pass Rozenhof and
continue. After some kilometers you will find a sign 'Dekkerswald'. Turn
right and enter the gate.
|
FROM THE SOUTH (A50 --> A73):
On A73 take exit 2 (Nijmegen Dukenburg) and follow the street. You will be
crossing a bridge with bus lane at the right side. At the third traffic
light after the bridge, turn right (Grootstalselaan).
For het Kasteeltje:
turn left at the second traffic light. This is the
St.Annastraat. Follow the signs 'Radboud Hospital' or 'UMC RADBOUD', then follow the
instructions above for 'het Kasteeltje' (but this time the service road is at
the right side).
|
For Catharina:
turn left at the second traffic light. This is the St.
Annastraat. Follow it, after about 3 kilometers, Catharina is at the left
side, for parking see the map .
|
For Rozenhof and Dekkerswald:
follow the street for about 4 kilometers
(passing a few traffic lights and a railroad crossing). At the end the street
makes a sharp bend and you arrive at a roundabout.
|
For Rozenhof:
turn left and soon you will see the hotel at your right. The
parking is across the street.
|
For Dekkerswald:
turn right (direction Groebeek), after 1.4 kilometers you
will see the entrance at your right.
