Ring objects and derived ring objects

Abstract

Algebraic structures can often be described using operads and monads. I will explain this for commutative monoids and rigs (rings without negatives). A more general idea is to build in homotopies and discuss `highly homotopy coherent structures' on objects in categories where homotopy notions make sense. I will discuss examples of monoids and rigs `up to homotopy' in examples such as topological spaces and chain complexes over a field.
