Parabolic restriction of tempered representations
Parabolic induction, or the formation of princpal series, is one of
the main sources of representations of reductive groups. For smooth
representations of p-adic reductive groups, the functor of parabolic
induction admits an obvious left adjoint which, by a remarkable
theorem of Bernstein, is also a right adjoint. I will present a
conjectural analogue of this "second adjoint theorem" for tempered
representations of real reductive groups, and outline a proof for the
group SL(2,R).
This is based on joint work with Pierre Clare, Nigel
Higson and Robert Yuncken.
