Abstract

Maths and stats support services are found in the majority of British higher education institutes, in one form or another, and form a vital part of the university support network for many students. The provision of this support is in response to two main driving factors: the use of maths and stats in university subjects, which might not have traditionally used quantitative methods, is increasing while the typical student body is diversifying due to various recruitment initiatives. In this talk I will give a brief history of maths support in the UK, an overview of its current state, and discuss the challenges we, as practitioners, face in providing support to a broad range of students. In light of these challenges, I will explain the current provision at Heriot Watt University and discuss future plans to develop our service and actively engage students with mathematics and statistics in the context of their degree programmes.
