Bridges of symmetry: An invitation to the Langlands program

Abstract

Often described as a grand unified theory of mathematics, the Langlands program is a vast web of conjectures connecting number theory, harmonic analysis, and algebraic geometry. One of its central goals is to forge a powerful bridge between arithmetic symmetries (encoded by Galois groups) and analytic objects (automorphic forms). This journey will begin locally: after introducing the p-adic numbers for a fixed prime p, we will investigate the "local" Langlands correspondence. We will then assemble these local pieces across all primes to catch a glimpse of the global side of the program.
