Finiteness theorems for maps of general type

Abstract

Maehara proved that any fixed variety admits only finitely many dominant rational maps to varieties of general type, up to birational equivalence on the target. In his framework of "special varieties" and "orbifolds", Campana introduced the notion of a "rational map of general type", with the philosophy that many theorems about maps to general type varieties should more generally hold for general type maps. Following this philosophy, I will explain how to strengthen Maehara's theorem by replacing the assumption that the target is of general type by the strictly weaker assumption that the maps are of general type. This is part of my dissertation and reflects joint work with Ariyan Javanpeykar and Erwan Rousseau.
