From amenability of discrete groups to amenability of Banach algebras.
Does this ever happen to you: Oops my sphere has fallen apart, while gluing my sphere back together I end up with two identical copies of my original sphere. Stefan Banach and Alfred Taski had the same problem 100 years ago. Driving this paradox is the notion of amenable groups. The talk aims to introduce this notion from this starting point. Furthermore, we show how to generalize this notion to Banach algebras, and highlight equivalent notions for \(C^*\)-algebras.
