Model categories
Daniel Quillen introduced model categories in 1967. His framework abstracts many phenomena observed for topological spaces and homotopies of continuous maps. The definition allows for the consideration of homotopy in other settings: modules, chain complexes, spectra, and many more. Since then, homotopy theory has matured into a flourishing field encompassing many disciplines. I will try to convince you of the usefulness of model categories and try to explain how my research in the field of parametrized equivariant homotopy theory makes use of them.
