What is Geometric Representation Theory?

Abstract

Geometric representation theory refers to a broad collection of ideas and methods in which geometric structures play a central role in understanding and constructing representations. After a brief introduction to basic representation theory, we will try to provide some ideas on why geometric tools should be used to understand certain phenomena in representation theory. We are going to mention some interesting examples, such as the very famous Borel-Weil-Bott theorem.
