Coping with uncertainty: from modeling to prediction.

Abstract

Many mathematical models describing the behavior of physical systems involve quantities which are stochastic or simply not known a priori. For example, the material properties of a body might not be known exactly due to the presence of impurities or because the material is highly heterogeneous. Such uncertainties make the predictions of mathematical models also uncertain. In this talk, I will discuss how uncertainty can be incorporated in the models and how it can be quantified computationally. I will present examples in nano-optics, material science and biology.
