What is Poisson geometry?

Abstract

While the origins of the Poisson bracket lie in celestial mechanics, the study of Poisson geometry in a purely mathematical framework has become an active and growing field of research on its own recently. The beauty of Poisson geometry lies in the various relations to other mathematical areas, such as foliation theory, symplectic geometry or Lie theory. In this talk we want to highlight these relations and give some examples. Moreover, we will take a closer look at one specific area of research in Poisson geometry, which is the question of linearization.
